How much do you pay for your electric power consumption? The business person has more to reckon with. The amount you pay for the convenience of electric appliances, lights and equipment at home and in the workplace for the whole year may shock you for a moment but it is a reality of life we have to live with. The measures we just enumerated are effective in cutting down our electric consumption cost. But that is a personal issue we have addressed. There are more pressing issues of global concern that we have to help address.
Climate change manifested in global warming is an alarming concern. There are many publications and websites that tackle the issue. Environmental laws are being reviewed and revamped according to the need of the times. Logging concessions are not granted anymore and even cutting of a single tree has become punishable by law in many countries. Burning of plastic and other such materials have equivalent penalties as prescribed by law. This has become a business opportunity for organisations specialising in solid waste disposal and management.
Indeed, a lot is going on along the area of environmental management and preservation. This undertaking has inevitably challenged use of fossil fuel which is a major cause of climate change. Fumes from the processing and use of petroleum products have contributed to the damage in the ozone layer. It is mainly suggestive of using renewable energy such as geothermal energy, solar energy, wind, water power, etc. as an environment-friendly alternative. Solar power is the most stable unlimited supply of renewable energy source. Use of solar energy since ancient times is evidence of the sun’s usefulness to the earthling.
Today, solar panels that capture solar energy which is then converted into electricity and stored into batteries called photovoltaic, are now a very popular subject of research and development. It is aimed at bringing down its cost per unit energy, being still expensive as of now. Very soon, with solar power, we can already enjoy unlimited use of electricity from an unlimited power resource, the sun.

Having a surge protector is really important when working with a computer. It doesn’t take much for an electrical surge to damage your electronics.
Here are some things to look for:
A response time of 10 nanoseconds or less
The ability to absorb 800 joules, minimum
A failure light so you know if the suppressor is defective
Make sure the suppressor can block electricity from phone lines.
Make sure that you can feed cable outlets through the suppressor
Ensure that it has enough outlets in different sizes for all your components
Make sure that the warranty is honored in case of damage to the suppressor or your hardware
Make sure it has a UL stamp (Underwriters Laboratory) and complies with the UL 1449 specifications. Protection comes in 3 numbers, 330, 440 and 550. The lower number offers the best protection.
Finally, don’t count on your suppressor to stop lightning. Unplug all appliances during a storm. Even the best surge protectors might not work under these conditions. You don’t want to find out the hard way.
As for recommended brands, my personal preference is is APC. I use this for both my desktop computer and my laptop, especially when I’m on the road. You never know what you might encounter. So far, I’ve used my suppressor all over Canada, the Unite States and Mexico. Some might disagree, but surge protectors can be a lifesaver, even on the road. Another important consideration is when you should replace your surge protector. Generally, it’s recommended that you replace your hardware every 3-5 years. With surge protectors you could shoot for the outside of 5 years.

The number of plugs in the surge protector also varies with the price you are willing to pay.
For pennies on the dollar for what you bought your expensive television and video game system for, you can get a piece of equipment that ensures your purchases will not be fried in the middle of a rain storm or if a power outage occurs. Not only that, but many surge protectors come with actual insurance policies that cover up to several hundred thousand dollars worth of equipment damage in the very unusual case that a power surge does damage any of your equipment that is plugged into the surge protector.
If you own electronic equipment that you want to keep for a long, long time, or at least not have to replace because of some freak accident, it is highly advised that you buy the surge protector as soon as possible.

Your television does not work, the DVD player fails to load and you are receiving nothing but a crackling noise from your brand-new speakers.
Fortunately, although this situation is rare you can imagine the anguish you will feel, not to mention the costs, at having to replace your brand-new home theatre. But you do not have to go through this problem if you have taken adequate precautions to prevent the problems of power surge. Many modern homes already have power surge protectors installed for the home wiring system but this may not always be adequate to protect sensitive equipment like a home theatre.
Let’s look at some things you can do so you never have to face the problem.
Unplug. It almost doesn’t need to be stated but if you unplug your equipment during a storm, you won’t have any problems. The issue here is that if you have equipment which has left turned on after you have gone out, you will need to remember to switch everything off at the wall before you leave. Every time you leave.
Install a Specific Surge Protector. If you don’t want to go to the expense of installing a surge protection circuit for your entire house, you can purchase particular protectors for each individual appliance you wish to safeguard. Bear in mind that the intensity of a power surge will vary according to the intensity of the storm.
Protect Your Entire Home. An electrician can install and appropriate surge protection device that will protect the circuitry in your entire house thereby giving you the best of all worlds.
