Why its important to have a good surge protector

Why its important to have a good surge protector

Article by Troy Smith

A standard piece of equipment you will probably buy for your computer system is a monster surge protector. Most of the designs serve an obvious function, that is letting you plug many components into an individual power outlet. This is quite a useful device, since there are numerous components that make up a computer system.

Another function of this power strip is to protect your electronics from power surges. This function is by far the more important one when it comes to this device. Throughout this article we will look at surge protectors, which are also called surge suppressors, to see what they actually do, how well they work, and when you will need them. We will also examine what protection levels are available and why you might not have the amount of protection that is necessary for your system, even if you have a quality surge protector.

A surge protector’s main role is to protect against surges. You may be wondering what exactly surges are. Also, you may wonder why electronics must be protected from surges.

A power surge, also known as transient voltage, is a significantly high increase in voltage that is well above the set level in a flow of electricity. The standard voltage in the average household and office wiring in the U.S. is 120 volts. There will be a problem when the voltage goes above 120 volts, and this is when a surge protector steps in to prevent the increase from destroying the computer system.

It would be helpful if you understand something about voltage. Voltage is defined as being a measure of difference in the electric potential energy. The way that electric current works is that it travels from one point to another when there is greater electric potential energy on the one end than on the other. A similar principle is what causes water to flow out of a hose — the higher pressure of water at one end forces it towards where there is lower pressure. Just think of voltage as being a measure of electrical pressure.

Various factors may cause the voltage to briefly increase. The increase must last at least three nanoseconds in order to create a surge. When the increase lasts for one or two nanoseconds, it is considered a spike. If this spike or surge is high enough, heavy damage will occur to the machine. The effect will be similar to applying excessive water pressure on a hose. The hose will burst as a result of this excessive pressure.

Essentially the same thing will happen when the electrical pressure is too high in the wire, and as a result the wire will heat up and burn. There may be strain put on the components of your machine, which will wear them down over time.
