When a UPS has been installed on a computer system, no other power conditioning is necessary.

UPS units provide surge suppression and voltage regulation in addition to their power backup function.

On computers that do not have backup power protection, a single-circuit surge protector is a good idea for protection against power disturbances originating inside the home. A second reason for using a protector is that high-quality suppressors also filter

EMI and RFI from the AC power line. This further reduces the risk of data loss or corruption from another source.

To get the full benefit of its protection, all of a node???s hardware (computer, printer, scanner, etc.) should be connected to AC power through the protector, up to the limit of its amp rating. Protectors should not be overloaded, even if they have sufficient outlets to allow it, because they have circuit breakers that will trip on overload whether or not it is caused by a power disturbance.

Single-circuit surge protectors are not expensive, but the cheapest ones should be avoided because they do not act fast enough or have a large enough suppression capability to protect electronic equipment well. Fast protectors with a suppression capability of 1000 joules or more cost from $ 35 to $ 50 each. Figure 13-9 shows a 15-amp capacity surge protector with multiple AC outlets, a phone/fax/modem connection and a coaxial cable connection.

Installing Voltage Regulators

Voltage regulators are not generally needed on home LAN equipment, unless the risk of sags or swells is high. This will only be the case if the home???s AC power is subject to voltage drops due to inadequate generating capacity in the area, or from the periodic effects of heavy-use electrical equipment inside the home or nearby.

If a voltage regulator is needed, it can be used in place of a surge protector because it will provide surge protection in addition to its main function. Voltage regulators do not have any battery power and so will not be helpful in the event of a power interruption. They simply regulate the power that comes into them on the AC line by increasing or reducing its voltage to within normal parameters.

Regulators can be obtained in a variety of sizes, from a 3-amp output capacity up to 15 amps or more. Like protectors, they are not expensive and are well worth the investment for circuits at high risk for sags or swells. Small units cost around $ 40 and are manufactured by several companies.

Sourcing and Reducing EMI and RFI

EMI becomes evident on a LAN when it impedes the flow of data by slowing down the network, or on occasion even stopping its function entirely. Just knowing the EMI is affecting the network is no help in correcting the problem, however. Toreduce or eliminate EMI from a network, a technician must know three things
