Keeping Your Home Safe with a Surge Protector Outlet

Keeping Your Home Safe with a Surge Protector Outlet

Article by Carla Wise

We all know that electricity can be very unpredictable. Electrical surges are not that rare, and it can damage some of your appliances and electronic devices. To protect your home from these unstable and dangerous surges, installing a surge protector outlet is a must.

A surge protector outlet works by pulling the extra electricity from the electrical route and redirect it into a grounding line so your appliances will be protected from the rush of electricity. Electric surges can cause short circuits and will break down your appliances. The ground wire is very important because it provides a way out for the extra electricity to go to. Do you notice that, sometimes, when you touch the metal handle of the refrigerator, or your electrical stove, and you’re not wearing some slippers, you get a little electrical shock called ground? That’s because the excess electricity goes to the ground – remember, the Earth is a giant conductor – instead of going to your appliances.

Oftentimes, a surge protector outlet comes has three holes in it, two parallel one, and a circular hole below them. You can often see them labeled as 3-pronged outlet. The hole is the entryway for the grounding line. That is why many appliances today that need a lot of electricity -such as the refrigerator, washing machine, oven, and more – have three prongs in them instead of the usual two to add more safety. Older homes usually use a 2-pronged outlet to plug in their appliances. But if you are concerned for your safety, it may be wise to replace it with a 3-pronged out that doubles as a surge protector outlet.

A surge protector outlet also prevents anyone from getting electrocuted. If there is an electric surge and a person happens to touch the plug, the amount of electricity that passes through his or her body can be deadly. Now, some people try to plug in their 3-pronged appliances in 2-pronged outlets by using a cheater plug. This is very risky because the extra electricity has nowhere to go, and it will either give you’re an electric shock, or damage your appliances.

How to Care for Home Appliances

Home appliances should be long-lasting and durable, and routine care can ensure that they are. Caring for appliances includes regular cleaning, inspection and replacement of worn-out parts. This maintenance can prevent costly repairs and extend the life of your appliances. Although there are general ways that you can care for your home appliances, always read the manual for each piece so that you know specific care recommendations..

Instructions

1

Things You’ll Need

    Surge protector

    Kitchen degreaser

    Oven cleaner

    Vacuum

    Dish soap

    Clean rags

    Broom

    Humidifier filter

2

Plug the microwave into a surge protector instead of a regular outlet. Microwaves contain solid-state circuitry, meaning power surges can damage the components. Clean the inside of the microwave with a kitchen degreaser once a week to keep it running efficiently.

3

Turn on all the burners on your stove once a month to make sure they work properly. Replace any burned-out electric burners. If the flames on your gas stove burn yellow, call a technician to check the gas lines. Remove the drip pans and scrub them until they are clean.

4

Replace the bulb in your oven whenever it burns out. Pull the oven and stove control knobs off, and wipe them down with a kitchen cleaner. Replace the knobs. Clean the oven with an oven cleaner to remove any baked-on food.

5

Check the freezer for ice buildup. If the ice is more than 1/4 inch thick, run the defrost. Vacuum the condenser coils at the back of the refrigerator. Empty the drain pan at the bottom of the unit. Remove expired and leaking food, and wipe down all the surfaces with soapy water, including the door gaskets.

6

Run the dishwasher only when it is full. Check the dishwasher racks for signs of rust, and replace them if you find any. Wipe down the inside of the dishwasher with soapy water once a month to prevent dishwasher-soap buildup.

7

Other Appliances
Clean out the lint trap in the dryer every time you use it. Vacuum the dryer vent once a year to remove lint buildup. Sweep underneath the dryer once a month.

8

Open the washing machine lid and see if water leaks into the tub when the washer is off. If so, call a technician. Check all the hoses in the back of the washer for cracks and tears, and replace any that are damaged.

9

Replace your humidifier filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Empty the water reservoir every two days to prevent mold growth.

Power Surges – Actions To Take And Avoid These

Power Surges – Actions To Take And Avoid These

Getting a power surge can be a real problem for an electronic device. Lots of different devices are susceptible to power surges and they can happen at anytime. Generally them will only last for a few milliseconds and usually the transformer in your power supply will filter this. Sometimes with high voltage there can be issues trying to insulating it and keeping it away from integrated circuit for example, which can have a dramatic effect on equipment.

Most of the time power that’s delivered to any electronic device is stable and constant. But, it’s not like that all the time due to many different reasons. We can get power surge occurs and this happens when our normal flow of electricity is interrupted and when it’s then started again. It’s can also happen when there’s some sort of strange occurrence within the electrical energy system. So what can cause this problem? There are many different events that can happen some are natural and some not so. Lighting strikes can really cause major issues, if this happens it can cause a power surge in the system and depending where this happens can really affect issues.

In your own home there are a number of appliances that can also cause power to surge. If you have a refrigerator because this can switch on and off as the motor requires that can also cause the power to spike at times. Most of the time this is not an issue but if this starts to divert electricity you may get highs and lows in your home. The main fuse box is in place to prevent this and in most cases works fine. If at anytime you find this is tripping then it’s time to call in the experts to try sort your problem for you.

A switching power supply is designed so it can convert AC in DC voltage. This is usually a drop down voltage from 240 volts to 12 volts, 9 volts or 5 volts for example. Many companies for example will use a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) for any critical equipment that they need to make sure works all the time if there are any power issues. In home many people will use a surge protector between the power socket and their computer equipment or anything else that uses a PSU.

To be safe trying an ensure you have a surge protector in place if your using any type of electronic equipment.

Surge Protectors: Stop Your Computer From Being Destroyed

Surge Protectors: Stop Your Computer From Being Destroyed

Article by Nathan Segal

Having a surge protector is really important when working with a computer. It doesn’t take much for an electrical surge to damage your electronics.

Here are some things to look for:

A response time of 10 nanoseconds or less

The ability to absorb 800 joules, minimum

A failure light so you know if the suppressor is defective

Make sure the suppressor can block electricity from phone lines.

Make sure that you can feed cable outlets through the suppressor

Ensure that it has enough outlets in different sizes for all your components

Make sure that the warranty is honored in case of damage to the suppressor or your hardware

Make sure it has a UL stamp (Underwriters Laboratory) and complies with the UL 1449 specifications. Protection comes in 3 numbers, 330, 440 and 550. The lower number offers the best protection.

Finally, don’t count on your suppressor to stop lightning. Unplug all appliances during a storm. Even the best surge protectors might not work under these conditions. You don’t want to find out the hard way.

As for recommended brands, my personal preference is is APC. I use this for both my desktop computer and my laptop, especially when I’m on the road. You never know what you might encounter. So far, I’ve used my suppressor all over Canada, the Unite States and Mexico. Some might disagree, but surge protectors can be a lifesaver, even on the road. Another important consideration is when you should replace your surge protector. Generally, it’s recommended that you replace your hardware every 3-5 years. With surge protectors you could shoot for the outside of 5 years.

Surge protectors are an essential piece of hardware. Give me 10 minutes of your time and I’ll show you how to speed up your computer, rid yourself of computer infestations and protect yourself online.

Is the Surge really working?

Is the Surge really working?
The latest figures for US causalties in Iraq shows that to some degree the Surge has had some effect on reducing violence in Iraq. The more intelligent tactics of Petreaus have had enjoyed certain successes especially in Baghdad and even Al Anbar and Diwalya provinces .

However, it would be wrong to imagine that the underlying reasons were the extra 30,000 US troops. The tactics of the insurgents and Al Qaeda have also changed. Typical of terrorist and insurgent movements they have adapted and withdrawn under fire to preserve their strength. Overall their power have not been severely diminished and they remain together with other Sunni insurgents and Shia militias a potent force waiting out the withdrawal or reduction of US forces that will mean the opening of the real all-out civil war in Iraq. The fact that Al Qaeda is still able to strike “spectaculars” like the assignation of the leader of the Sunni tribes cooperating with the US and the heads of Sunni and Shia militias meeting for talks are signs that their infrastructure and deep infiltration of Iraqi society remains in tact.

Lies, damned lies and statistics

With one year to the Presidential elections Bush of course realized that the war was unwinnable during his term in office. His best hope was to leave with a record of a reduced level of violence and a reduction in troops facilitated by his Surge strategy.

The Petraeus report in September 2007 was a well choreographed and prepared effort in conjunction with the White House to sell the Bush strategy. While it admitted shortcomings its overall effect was to try to give the image of a more stable Iraq. While it is true that the General’s tactics have had some effect on the situation, it would be wrong to imagine the statistics are the full story. Indeed many pointed out how the report was shot through with holes.

While the September figures were lowest for the year they were only equal to the same for the period the previous pre-Surge year. August and July were the deadliest for civilian deaths for the whole of 2007 Surge. Contrary to,the assertions of Petreaus sectarian attacks had almost doubled around the country. At the height of the Surge, the number of US troops killed was the highest ever. If there had been a fall in violence and attacks Baghdad, it was because the city had been ethnically cleansed of mixed areas. The capital, which was previously 65% Sunni became 75% Shia. The massive increase in millions of refugees contradicts the assertion that sectarian violence was down, as the migrants were fleeing ethno/religious strife.

Another fact which casts doubts on the accuracy of US Army statistics is they method of classification. According to the Army Car bombs are not considered sectarian attacks. Some 2,600 people killed by car bombs are discounted as victims of sectarianism and car bombings in July 2007 were 6% higher than before the Surge. Furthermore, only people shot in the head are counted as sectarian killings! Nor do the killings between Sunni and other Sunnis or Shia and other Shias count as statistics in the civil war. Moreover Al Qaeda is accounts for only an estimated 15% of violence.

It is also a lie to count the alliance with Sunni tribes against Al Qaeda as a victory of the Surge, since it began December 2006. Furthermore there is no indication that this will lead to political reconciliation between Sunnis and Shia, especially because the Shia government vehemently opposes the new Sunni militias and rightly sees them as a Frankenstein’s monster which can turn against Shias and against the US.

Indeed, all independent reports and analysis, including an inside report from the Pentagon paint a quite different picture to the political speech of Petreaus. Even he had to admit that violence remains at unacceptable levels. The fact is that wars and civil wars ebb and flow, war weariness can set in, only to be followed by a new upsurge in violence. Both Shia and Sunni militias are biding their time and keeping their powder dry for the real civil war which will come regardless of whether there are 170,000 or 130,000 US troops in Iraq.
