How much do you pay for your electric power consumption? The business person has more to reckon with. The amount you pay for the convenience of electric appliances, lights and equipment at home and in the workplace for the whole year may shock you for a moment but it is a reality of life we have to live with. These conveniences are essential tools for business and existence which we cannot do without.

Have we ever thought of cutting down on electric consumption? What measures have we come up with? Is one of yours in the list below?

• Switch off lights which are not in use without being anxious about security risk.• Only use equipment of the right size. Higher or over-capacity equipment consumes more electricity than necessary.• In hot or warm regions, using natural air for ventilation instead of the air-conditioner will drastically bring down electric consumption costs.• Use of gas-powered burner instead of the electric hotplate for boiling water and/or cooking.

The measures we just enumerated are effective in cutting down our electric consumption cost. But that is a personal issue we have addressed. There are more pressing issues of global concern that we have to help address.

Climate change manifested in global warming is an alarming concern. There are many publications and websites that tackle the issue. Environmental laws are being reviewed and revamped according to the need of the times. Logging concessions are not granted anymore and even cutting of a single tree has become punishable by law in many countries. Burning of plastic and other such materials have equivalent penalties as prescribed by law. Garbage disposal is subjected to strict regulation and placed under professional solid waste disposal management. This has become a business opportunity for organisations specialising in solid waste disposal and management.

Indeed, a lot is going on along the area of environmental management and preservation. This undertaking has inevitably challenged use of fossil fuel which is a major cause of climate change. Fumes from the processing and use of petroleum products have contributed to the damage in the ozone layer. It is mainly suggestive of using renewable energy such as geothermal energy, solar energy, wind, water power, etc. as an environment-friendly alternative. Solar power is the most stable unlimited supply of renewable energy source. Use of solar energy since ancient times is evidence of the sun’s usefulness to the earthling.

Today, solar panels that capture solar energy which is then converted into electricity and stored into batteries called photovoltaic, are now a very popular subject of research and development. It is aimed at bringing down its cost per unit energy, being still expensive as of now. Very soon, with solar power, we can already enjoy unlimited use of electricity from an unlimited power resource, the sun.

The government’s new economic stimulus plan includes tax credits worth as much as ,500 for consumers who upgrade their air conditioning system.

“One of the provisions of The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act Of 2009 is an energy tax credit for qualified energy efficiency improvements in the taxpayer’s principal residence,” “It’s a dollar for dollar tax credit equal to 30% of the investment, up to ,500.”

The tax credit is limited to certain types of energy efficient equipment which may include an air conditioning system. The requirements for packaged systems are to have a new system that has a SEER Rating of 14 and an EER rating of 12. For Split Air Conditioning systems that have a furnace which is gas powered the requirement is 16 SEER and 13 EER.

For Heat Pump split systems the requirement is 15 SEER and 12.5 EER. SEER is Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating.

EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio. The EER is calculated by an air conditioners British thermal units (BTU) rating over its wattage. The term “BTU” is used to describe the heat value (energy content) of fuels, and also to describe the power of heating and cooling systems. This is also referred to by the amount of Tons your air conditioner is.

How to Save On Your Air Conditioning

Installing a programmable thermostat can save you 10% or more a year on your heating and cooling bills by simply turning your thermostat back by 10 to 15% for 8 hours. By using a programmable thermostat you can have the house automatically turn the heat or air lower when your not home. Such as lowering the house temperature during the winter by turning the heat off, and have it turn on 30 minutes or so before you get home so that its comfortable again as you walk in.

Set your thermostat as high as you comfortably can during summer. The smaller the difference between inside and outside temperature, the lower your cooling bill will be.

Avoid walking in from outside and turning your thermostat lower then normal, when you turn on your air conditioner. This will not cool your house faster and will only result in excessive cooling and, therefore unnecessary expense.

Think about using an interior fan in conjunction with your window air conditioner to help spread the cooled air through the house more effectively without greatly increasing your power bill.

Avoid place computers, lamps, TVs, and other large equipment near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat which will cause it to run longer then needed wasting electircity.

Planting trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units can lower the electricity it uses by up to 10%, but
while your shading your air conditioner, make sure to leave room for it to still get air flow so that the unit can run correctly.
